MechWarrior VR: Does It Exist, and What to Play on Quest Instead

There is no official MechWarrior VR game. The closest thing is VRWarrior, a community-made beta mod for MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries that adds headset support on PC, and it does not run natively on a standalone Quest. If you want MechWarrior-style cockpit combat on Quest without a gaming PC, Vox Machinae is the most faithful option, and we rank the alternatives below by how MechWarrior-like they feel. We make MECHA, one of the games on that list, so we will be clear about where it fits and where it does not.

Prices checked September 2026 and change with sales.

Does MechWarrior VR exist?

Not as a product you can buy. Piranha Games has not shipped VR support for MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, and there is no MechWarrior title on the Meta Quest Store at the time of writing. If you search for mech warrior VR you will find forum threads and the VRWarrior mod, nothing official.

That gap is the reason so many VR mech games exist. Players who grew up on MechWarrior want to sit in a cockpit, feel the weight of a walking war machine, and manage heat and torso twist with their own hands. Several Quest developers, including us, are building toward pieces of that feeling in different ways.

The VRWarrior mod for MechWarrior 5

VRWarrior is a community mod hosted on Nexus Mods. It is in beta, and it adds head-mounted display support to MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries on PC. Here is what we know about how it works, based on the mod's own documentation at the time of writing.

  • It is launched through Steam launch options. For SteamVR headsets the documented flags are -allowhmd -d3d12.
  • The MW5 Mod Compatibility pack has to be loaded first, or the mod will not work correctly.
  • FidelityFX Sharpening must be disabled. Leaving it on causes crashes.
  • It is PC VR only. A Quest can run it, but only tethered or streamed from a PC through Link, Air Link or Virtual Desktop. There is no standalone version.

Because it is a beta mod on top of a game that was never designed for VR, expect rough edges. Menus, cockpit scale and motion comfort will vary by headset and by the version of the game you are running. Read the mod page carefully before installing, and keep your expectations at "impressive hack" rather than "finished VR game".

If you do not own a VR-capable PC, or you want something you can play on the couch with no cables, the rest of this post is for you.

MechWarrior-style games on Quest, ranked by how MechWarrior-like they feel

We ranked these on one question: how much does it feel like piloting a BattleMech? Weight, cockpit, deliberate pacing and heat-of-battle decisions push a game up the list. Speed and arcade handling push it down, even when the game itself is excellent. Our own MECHA sits last for exactly that reason, and we think that is the honest place for it.

1. Vox Machinae (most sim-like)

Vox Machinae is the heavy, deliberate MechWarrior-like option on Quest. You sit in a cockpit, reach for physical controls, and pilot a machine that moves like it weighs what a mech should weigh. Multiplayer is the core, and a single-player campaign was added in 2022 for people who want to play alone. It costs about $29.99 and holds a 4.2 rating from 509 reviews at the time of writing. It supports seated play, which is how most MechWarrior veterans will want to run it. If you only buy one game from this list to scratch the MechWarrior itch, this is it.

Verdict: the closest thing to MechWarrior VR on a standalone Quest.

2. Iron Rebellion

Iron Rebellion by Black Beach Studio is cockpit mech combat built around 8v8 online matches. The cockpit is convincing and the mechs have presence, so it lands high on the MechWarrior scale. Where it differs is focus: it is a multiplayer game first, with bots available for solo practice rather than a full campaign. Price was about $24.99 with a recent sale at $14.99, and it is rated 4.5 from 754 reviews at the time of writing. If your favorite MechWarrior memories are online lance drops, this will feel more like home than Vox Machinae does.

Verdict: the pick for team cockpit battles online, less so for a solo campaign.

3. World of Mechs

World of Mechs gives you 32 mechs across 8 classes, a single-player campaign with boss fights, and online 4-player multiplayer. It is a Quest 2 era game, and the cockpit and handling do not have the fidelity of the two games above, but the roster is the largest on the platform and the class system will feel familiar to anyone who has agonized over a light versus an assault. It costs about $19.99 and sits at 4.1 from 266 reviews at the time of writing. Buy it for variety and a campaign rather than for feel.

Verdict: the MechWarrior roster experience without the MechWarrior weight.

4. MECHA (career ladder and speed)

MECHA is the least MechWarrior-like game here in handling, and the most MechWarrior-like in structure. Handling first: you pilot a 200-ton flying mech, and you move it by leaning your body to strafe, dash and dodge. Fights are fast aerial dogfights in arenas, not slow walks across a battlefield. Structure second: career mode is a rank ladder from Rookie to All-Star with tournaments, rival pilots carrying cash bounties, corporate sponsor missions, and a mod system where every upgrade costs you something elsewhere. If what you loved about MechWarrior 5 was building a career, managing loadout trade-offs and chasing the next contract, that part is here. It is single-player only, needs no internet, costs about $9.99, and supports seated, standing and roomscale play.

Verdict: not a sim, but the best career ladder and the fastest mech combat on Quest.

What MECHA is not

We would rather lose a sale than mislead a MechWarrior fan. MECHA does not have a slow walking mech, a heat system to manage, or a cockpit full of switches. It has no online multiplayer, so there are no lance drops with other people. Team modes put you alongside AI teammates against AI opponents. If those are the things you want, Vox Machinae or Iron Rebellion are the right purchase and we say so in our full list of the best VR mech games on Quest.

What MECHA does well is the part MechWarrior never did: it makes your body the flight stick. Raise your arm to deploy a shield. Trigger Gigaform to triple your mech's size and dominate the arena for a while. Paint your mech with custom neon glow. One player review on the store put it this way: "the movement and combat are very unique and unlike any VR game i have played." If you want to know how the lean system feels and why we built it that way, we explain it in our post on VR motion sickness in flying games.
